Wonderful Winchelsea

Just outside Rye on the East Sussex coast is the village of Winchelsea. I always call in here when I'm visiting Rye. It's about as cute and chocolate boxy as it gets. Centuries ago this was a bustling town of sea traders...but then the tide went out, and out, and Winchelsea became land locked. Today what remains is a quiet little village sitting on a hill overlooking the sea. It seems like it's set in aspic, unchanged for decades, and it's only the grandeur of some of the houses that give clues to it's ancient past.

You still drive in to the village through the old castle archway, Strand Gate, today.

The high street were the post office stands today has hardly changed over 100 years (top right in the photo below)

Then...

And now...

This was the Castle armoury ... now a beautiful home

Houses rarely come on the market in Winchelsea but there's a couple of beauties at the moment (all sadly well out of my reach but it's great to dream!) Do you have a favourite?

Christmas Vintage and Handmade Fair

I know I know it's August and I shouldn't be mentioning Christmas but I couldn't wait to tell you the news! After weeks of searching for the right venue for holding my first Vintage Fair I have finally found somewhere just right. You might remember I posted about a venue in the pretty village of Sarratt but after much deliberation we decided bad weather might put people off venturing out into the country and so I've gone for somewhere much more accessible in winter weather. Here it is...

It's a lovely hall with that villagey feel that I was searching for but most important with good transport links and that all important parking for stall holders.

So it's all systems go and I'm so nervous/excited in equal amounts!

Here's the flyer for the event. If there's any UK vintage/handmade traders out there that are interested in participating please get in touch!

Antique shopping in Rye

We managed to squeeze in a couple hours to browse and shop in Rye on our Day out in East Sussex last weekend - well what's a trip without a little shopping thrown in?!

What's lovely about Rye is the lack of chains and the wonderful selection of independent shops that line the windy lanes and cobbled streets.

There are some lovely interior shops like this one - Pale & Interesting

And of course Rye is famous for it's antique stores

Loved this potato rack converted for storage

But with a few little packages under are arms ;-) we had to drag ourselves away to see the sea before we set off for home!
